The Seedling Stage is the second of four life cycles that Cannabis has. First one being Germination of course. The Seedling Stage begins when the plant emerges out from the medium. Their first set of real leaves will be small but visible. The ones we all associate Cannabis with. the first set will have one leaflet, the second set will have three leaflets. As the plant grows a new set of leaves they will be bigger with more leaflets. Starting with three and going all the way up to eleven, with some pure Sativas having as many as seventeen leaflets per leaf.
Caring For A Fresh Seedling
Seedlings need Air and Light. After germination is complete put the fresh sprout under light (Fluorescent or MH Lamp) with no more than six hours of dark. Use an 18/6 or even 24 hour cycle if heat is not an issue. During the Seedling stage the plant needs to build roots and stem structure. A small fan will aide this quite well. Keep ’em moist and under good lighting with fresh air. Soon the Seedling will be growing healthy leaves as it enters the Vegetative Stage and will need to be transplanted.
Once the plant has a couple nice set of leaves and growing healthy it will be time to transplant. Transplanting should be done before the plant starts to look like it is too big for the pot or cup it is in. See more on Transplanting. Transplant the new Seedling into it’s permanent container and begin the Vegetative Cycle.
